Kathryn Running - BSc., B.Ed., M.I.R
ALTERNATIVE DISPUTE RESOLUTION
As a mediator, facilitator and trainer in the field of dispute resolution, I am trained in and committed to an interest based dispute resolution approach. As a negotiator, I steer away from the adversarial approach and competitive style in preference for a collaborative style. As a mediator following an interest based approach, I seek to uncover the specific collection of interests related to a negotiation issue, relationship and or process. The various concerns, goals, hopes and fears that individuals hold are explored in an attempt to ultimately arrive at a quality memorandum of agreement.

“During the past 12 months, I have taken two courses from Kathryn Running, taught as part of the Conflict Resolution Certificate Program at Loyalist College, Belleville, Ontario.Kathryn is able to create an environment that invites and encourages learning through participation, and shares her own practical experience to contribute to learning objectives. She has excellent facilitation skills, and is able to ensure active participation from very diverse groups of individuals. Her manner is totally non-threatening, and her
keen interest in learning and teaching is evident in the way she provides meaningful feedback and connects with her students.Several of my staff have also taken course from Kathryn, and her style and approach to learning have received high commendation. I wouldn’t hesitate to take another course from her.”
Charlaine MacLean, Director Belleville Tax Services Office, Canadian Customs and Revenue Agency (Dec 2001)

“I found that the practical aspects of the courses, Enhancing Group Effectiveness, Managing Conflict on the Telephone and Consensus Building were extremely helpful. As you know, I am a Workplace Relations Advisor within a federal department and I am always looking for the practicality of concepts presented. If I am to assist personnel involved in workplace conflict, I need the tools. You provided me with the tools. For example, in our Systems Design course, one of the exercises involved designing a system on how to handle conflict within our own workplace. Although our department has an overall policy regarding harassment and conflict, it is a very high level document. I was able to put together a system, from my workplace’s perspective, present it to my supervisors and implement some aspects presented. All that and receive a good mark on the assignment. I found that all of the lectures that you presented were firmly grounded in practical aspects."
Rick Spence, Workplace Relations Advisor, CFB Trenton (Dec 2001)

"I was impressed by her ability to hear, verify and clarify, and articulate the differing points of view of two unions and management. In addition, she clearly identified the common ground, which made our work more straightforward and less confrontational than we had anticipated."
Katharine Ham, Mediator (1998)
